How do I convert an avi to something I can make a VCD with?

You will need the freeware programs VirtualDub and TMPGEnc To convert to mpg.

You will also need a burning program. I prefer Nero, but there are others more than capable of doing the job.

1. First you need to extract the audio from the video file. To do so .....

Start Virtualdub. Open the video you wish to convert File->Open video file.( ignore any warnings you may receive at this point, you are just using Virtuadub to extract audio, video problems are not an issue)

Select File->File Information and note the fps as the video source fps because you will need it later..

makevcd1

Next Select under Audio->Full processing mode.

makevcd2

Select Audio->Compression and select No compression (PCM)

makevcd3

Select Audio->Conversion. Change the Sampling rate to 44100Hz if they aren't already.

makevcd4

And...

makevcd5

Save the wav by clicking on File->Save WAV... the wav will be saved as a large uncompressed video file.

makevcd6

Ok now you have extracted the audio, now lets work on the big part...the video.

Close virtuadub and open TMPGEnc. If the Wizard comes up..close it. Its a complete waste of time.

makevcd7

First Browse for Video File (Image A, #1), then browse for the sound file you created with virtuadub (Image A, #2)

Now remember that fps number I told you to remember in the beginning? Now is where that comes into play.

Click Load (Image A,#3).

makevcd8

Then choose Settings, Advanced (Image A, #4)

makevcd9

Select Full screen (keep aspect ratio) under Video arrange method to keep the same aspect ratio(widescreen, fullscreen) as the video source(if you have a widescreen movie and you want it to be in fullscreen select No margin(keep aspect ratio).

Now just pick an output name and location (Image A,#5), Then click Start.(Image A,#6)

After this is achieved..all you have to do us burn it onto a cd in VCD format. More detailed info on burning with specific programs and splitting to fit on 2 CDs if needed. Remember a 80min/700mb Cd can hold a 800mb/80 minute mpg burned in VCD format.
