What is Ogg Vorbis



It is a new audio compression format. It is like the better known format MP3. However there is one vast difference, it is free, there are no patents. There is no licencing and no closed source.

The format has become very popular among the opensource community. Not only is the fact that it is opensource appealing, but the higher quality for comparably sized files is another plus. Unfortunately, the MP3 format has gained wide acceptance since the 1990s and has so far proven to be a difficult trend to overcome.

It has begun to gain greater acceptance in the gaming community due to its superior quality over the older mp3 compression formats. Only time will tell if the inroads made can be built upon.

Can I convert my MP3 collection to the Ogg Vorbis



Short answer? Yes

Long Answer? yes, but it is not a good idea. Both formats are what are called lossy formats. Meaning that with each re-encoding some quality is lost. By encoding an mp3 into an ogg vorbis file you would only lose quality, never gain.

Quality Setting



Measuring the audio quality if an Ogg Vorbis file by kilobits per second is not a very reliable method. The format has been set upon a scale ranging from -1 to 10. Consider it an adjustment for the OGG Vorbis equivalent to an MP3's variable-bitrate.

In an Ogg Vorbis stream there is not an easily measurable characteristic such as bitrate, its a far more relative method.

But for those of us that still think in MP3 terminology. The default setting for Quality is 3. Which creates a smaller file with significantly better quality than a MP3 compressed at 128kbps. A setting of Qality 0 is roughly equivalent to 64kbps. 5 is roughly 160kbps, and 10 would be significantly superior to the top quality 320kbps MP3's. In Closing



I find the Ogg Vorbis alternative superior to MP3 compression options and will continue to support its efforts to establish itsef. However, until more people use the format, it would be unrealistic to give up totally on the MP3 format just yet.
